Emma Fisher
Soundtrack of The Bell Jar

If I were to create a soundtrack for Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, a song I would include is "Fade to Black" by Metallica.  In the novel, Esther proved to be a seriously depressed person through her acts of suicide and constant dark thoughts. The lyrics in this song connect to the feelings of emptiness and loss of oneself Esther felt in the novel.  They also describe how Esther's only option to end her pain was suicide.
Another song I would include is "This is the Last Time" by Keane.  This song is about making up your mind about someone and leaving them for good.  I believe this closely relates to Esther's relationship with Buddy.  Esther began to lose her feelings for Buddy and struggled with ending their relationship for good.  This song describes how Esther took control of her situation by sending the letter to Buddy, and ending their connection at last.
A third song that would be on the soundtrack of The Bell Jar, would be Coldplay's "Fix You".  After awhile of being depressed, Esther was sent to a mental asylum where she met Dr. Nolan.  Dr. Nolan had such a positive affect on Esther's recovery and essentially fixed her mental state.  The song's lyrics describe how Esther, with the assistance of Dr. Nolan, would find her way back home.
The last song on my soundtrack of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, would be "Control" by Janet Jackson.  Esther especially struggled with losing herself during the novel, and not having control over her life.  This song's main idea is having control of oneself instead of being what other's expect one to be. It describes what Esther really wanted and what she was missing in her life, control and independence.
