Connections

Idolizing of Children- In all three of the stories war affects the characters. In Bananafish, Seymour suffers from PTSD and in the end ends up committing suicide because coming home after the war and living with the troubles of the war. He couldn't live with the corruption he saw and the pain he lived through, and after spending sometime with Sybil and seeing how pure she was and how impure he was, he took his own life. In Uncle Wiggly, Eloise wants the best for her child, Ramona because she is mimicking her mom and her moms love life. Eloise tells her daughter to sleep in the middle of the bed and forget her imaginary friends. she is trying to keep Ramona pure and perfect and trying to get her to leave behind her imaginary friends. In JBTWWTE the main characters are children, and the point of view the story was told from was two girls playing tennis. at the end of the story they revert back to their pure nature and don't care about money.

Materialism- In APDFB, Uncle Wiggly, and JBTWWTE, all of the characters are materialistic and value money and possessions over people. In APDFBF Muriel is a stereotypical rich white women in the 50's. she was on the phone with her mom and they talked about what people were wearing and she was painting her nails and wearing expensive clothes. in Uncle Wiggly, they are in a lavishly decorated apartment. they are wearing extravagant broaches and silks. they have heavily stacked bookcases and don't pay any attentions to them. In JBTWWTE, Selina's apartment was described as being very expensive looking but also hideous. Ginnie is also focused on getting money back from Selina.
