Soundtrack for The Bell Jar

When I Grow Up - The Pussycat Dolls      In the very beginning of the book, though she seems downcast, Esther seems to have only good things ahead of her as she lives a glamourous life in New York

1, 2, 3, 4 - Feist      When Jay Cee asked her what she planned on doing in the future, Esther realized she didn't know what she wanted to do anymore. As the lyrics go, "old teenage hopes are lying at your door," and "you're changing your heart." Esther doesn't have a plan for herself like she used to.

Hot n Cold - Katy Perry      Esther talks about how Buddy is a hypocrite, and can't keep his values straight.

Down - Jay Sean      After she left the internship and moved in with her mom, she was, in fact, feeling down.

Welcome to the Black Parade - My Chemical Romance      This song, about death and accepting death, describes how Esther felt when she attempted suicide.

Disturbia - Rihanna      When her suicide attempt failed and she received the shock treatments, Esther's mental illness was at its worst in the whole book.

Cry Me a River - Justin Timberlake      This song, which describes Justin Timberlake's breakup with Britney Spears, also describes Esther's breakup with Buddy after he sent her a letter saying that he cheated on her and that he wants to possibly reconcile their relationship.

How to Save a Life - The Fray     Esther's friend, Joan, commits suicide.

So What - Pink      Esther shows she doesn't need Buddy anymore when he comes to visit and she shows him she's completely fine. She also shows she doesn't depend on men when she breaks contact with the math professor.

Clocks - Coldplay      The lyrics "tigers waiting to be tamed" describe the lingering threat of "the bell jar" descending again. The chorus of "you are you are" is reminiscent of Esther's quote, "I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart; I am, I am, I am."
