Party Animals Short
First of all this story appealed to me because of the title. It seemed like it would be interesting and age appropriate. The actual story was appealing because it had humor and wonderful descriptions that made me easily picture the story in my head. The reader brought the story to life with ease. She used pauses, sped up, and slowed down at appropriate times. She also whispered and spoke louder to exaggerating certain words. Also, the reader spoke in different tones to represent different characters. I thought doing this made the dialogue come to life since it sounded much different than the narrative parts. Overall this reader executed their goal completely through the use of volume, tone, and rhythm in her reading.

I listened to the Party Animals short called "Turning" read by Christine Lahti. The description, "a small boy charming 3 women", seemed creepy at first, but I decided to listen to it nevertheless. The story was appealing, but it didn't necessarily live up to my expectations as much as I would have hoped. The story had a pretty good plot, although definitely a little weird at times. It didn't have that many really long descriptions, which made it easier to follow along, and also made it easier to pay attention. I think the amount of imagery used was perfect, and I'm glad that I wasn't bored or uninterested when I was listening to the story.
ReplyDeleteThe reader, Christine Lahti, did an amazing job of reading the piece. The storyline was a little bit creepy in and of itself, so the reader's creepy character voices worked really well. She also didn't rush the reading, which made it easier to follow along, especially because this story had so much plot. Just like Emma already said, she exaggerated words to make them fit their definitions, which I found really interesting. She also paused at the right moments, giving us moments of impact throughout the reading. She successfully created this eery/creepy tone that I found really amusing. I think she did a really good job.
I listened to "Turning" too.
DeleteI thought the comparison of the three old ladies to images of swans in a broken projector was weird and unexpected but it gave a really clear description of the scene. I like how the story is through the point of view of the boy and describes things like a young boy would. There was a story within the story that the old ladies were telling the boy, which made it more interesting. I liked how the story ended with references to the beginning, like when as the women were leaving they were described as looking like fowls packed into a crate for market.
Overall, I didn't think the story was very interesting because the plot wasn't that exciting. Also, I didn't like that the narrator wasn't a character in the story, which made the voice reading the story seemed detached and irrelevant. It seemed like the reader's voice didn't add to the story, and I thought it sounded too much like an audiobook.

I listened to the podcast "party animals" because I found the initial narrating appealing. As the story went on I began to get engaged to the story itself. the different scenarios all wrapped around the common theme of parties was funny and relatable. the wacky weird theme of the story could often get hard to follow but when i was done listening i was left with a wholesome feeling. the speaker used pauses and crescendos to keep the flow of the story. Many times the narrator would rise to a peak and then allow the next line to drop with flow. The reader was confident but allowed the story to take the center stage. The narrator was the perfect blend of confident yet humbled to the story
ReplyDeleteLike Manisha, I also listened to the Party Animals short, "Turning" read by Christine Lahti. I found the story itself strange, but i was different and unexpected so I was able to enjoy it. Like Manisha pointed out, there weren't many long descriptions, which is a good thing because too much detail can bore me. However I wish that there had been a tad bit more description so that I didn't feel like I was being thrown into some random story.
ReplyDeleteChristine Lahti did an excellent job reading this story. She had a difficult task because she had to read for different characters (in different voices). However she pulled it off and brought each character to life individually.
